17th Week in Country

Here is another example of our guys doing "small" things under very difficult circumstances. Our guys are still clearing neighborhoods (muhallas)and we're trying our best to get projects done wherever we can get our contracting personnel into and out of safely...Meantime, our guys just go find time to come back into the neighborhoods as soon as it's safe enough for the families to come out of their homes again. Our guys decided this neighborhood needed something for the kids and so they cleaned up the playground and made it look "familiar". Couple this "small gift" with everything else and you begin to get the idea. On the political side, our State Dept folks are giving it their best to train government personnel to operate effectively to get lights, water, sanitation, roads, schools, health care centers, hospitals, etc etc operational so folks can begin to live modest, yet decent lives..it's not easy by any yardstick but at least someone is here trying to help them who otherwise wouldn't have a chance. I am forever humbled by our guys and gals efforts in spite of the odds against them both here and at home...to keep the Faith because if "love thy neighbor" is what He said, then it's what our guys and gals are doing...

Comments:
Buffer....just got back from 4 weeks in Virginia at UVA. Nothin like your stint or work but I can appreciate the difficulty of being away from family a little more after having gone there. Hope you are well, look forward to seeing you soon. I sent you an email of a commercial one of my classmates showed me, ought to give you a chuckle while you are over there. See ya.

Dr. Bill:

It's a strange feeling relaxing and enjoying retirement in Hawaii while you're over there in desperate circumstances putting yourself in harm's way each and every day. Having been there, I know the sacrifices you and other brave Americans are making so folks like me can enjoy our retirement. Thank you, although just a thank you is not enough.

Keep up the courageous work and be safe!!!

Anonymous Harly...what a neat email from Hawaii..You are the only living soul I know on the island ...makes me feel like I'm "sailing" in the peaceful Pacific. Wasn't long ago (I was 1 year old) when my Dad decided the Navy needed some sailors because of what happened at Pearl harbor and he left us and now yours truly and yourself have done the same post 9/11.
Must be in our genes...LOL (least that's what I told Colette)...LOL
Can't help ourselves...just hopeless when it comes to tryin to help others in need...

Anyway, thanks for the memories. You were a great example for me and
I am eternally grateful for your time, service and unselfishness ...Enjoy the ride my friend ...God bless.
